The Girl Who Became Three Boys

THE GIRL WHO BECAME THREE BOYS.

This documentary is proof of just how easy it is to fool people, especially the younger generation and because the internet is so vast and new sites like Facebook have been created and anyone can make a profile under whoever’s name, whether they be a real person or not. This documentary was the main inspiration we had to base our coursework upon as issues with the web such as identity fraud is a trending problem and we are the generation seeing and even experiencing different sides to the web both positive and negative. Not only is this issue easy to relate to as we are in a sense the “digital generation”, it is also fascinating to see what goes through the mind of harassers on the internet: it could be out of jealousy, anger, revenge or even pure boredom.

In this case, Gemma was said to have a personality disorder along with autism in her trial but most people could argue that she has some sort of paranoia disorder if thinking that making up friends would make her keep the ones that were drifting away from her. Most, along with me, think that this was a malicious and cruel act and to make young girls fall in love with boys that didn’t even exist and have that much power behind a screen could be seen to be so dangerous as well as vindictive.

Synopsis

This documentary revolved mainly around 6 main people, but only 3 of them were actually real. Gemma Barker was an older girl who was friends with two girls that were younger than her: Alice and Jessica. She then felt as though she was drifting away from them, so she created profiles on Facebook posing as boys on fake Facebook accounts to engage with the two friends and made as though the ‘boys’ knew her. What then happened was that the boy she had made up for Jessica, Luke, wasn’t her type, so she made him disappear and then went on to create a new persona, Conner. This boy was more proper and more Jessica’s type, but when it came to meeting Jessica as Conner, ‘he’ would talk to her through texting so that she wouldn’t suddenly notice that ‘he’ had the same voice as Conner.
With Alice, she posed as Aaron, and tricked her all the way just as she did with Jessica. So eventually she was founded out by the police, by the girls, everyone. Her manipulation and determination to go to the lengths of creating made up characters just so that her friends would stay by her side proved her to be a deceiving and twister character

This was a serious concern that had to be brought to the attention of the public especially because most people have access to the internet, in particular Facebook and with a population of around 800 million users news reporters had to publish the matter to warn everyone of the risks of online dating or even using Facebook or even in case other people didn’t know of these types of risks.
