TRAILER MUSIC

The music we have chosen for our teaser trailer is of the dub-step genre called Liquid Pearl. We decided that this track would be best for our trailer because it has the right tempo which  is quite upbeat and fast which goes with the fastness of our trailer. Also the piano tones in the track gives the music a type of emotional aura to the trailer, which is ideal as it is a psychological drama. It was produced by an unsigned DnB artist, and we have obtained the permission from the producer of the music.

GENRE RESEARCH- Psychological Drama

GENRE RESEARCH

The genre for our trailer is psychological drama and in order to successful portray this, I researched clear definitions of the genre within film.

psy·cho·log·i·cal

adjective
1. of, pertaining to, dealing with, or affecting the mind, especially as a function of awareness, feeling, or motivation: psychological play; psychological effect.
(Dictionary.com)

Psychological
''Elements that are related to the mind or processes of the mind; they are mental rather than physical in nature. Sometimes the suspense comes from within one solitary character where characters must resolve conflicts with their own minds. Usually, this conflict is an effort to understand something that has happened to them. These conflicts are made more vivid with physical expressions of the conflict in the means of either physical manifestations, or physical torsions of the characters at play.''

dra·ma

noun
1.  a story involving conflict or contrast of character
2. any situation or series of events having vivid, emotional, conflicting, or striking interest or results: the drama of a murder trial.
(Dictionary.com)

Psychological drama is a subgenre of psychological thriller in the sense that it's extremely character-driven and most of the conflicts are internal or emotional - but the biggest difference between both, in fact, is that the psychological drama is NOT a thriller. It's much slower-paced, for one, and usually does not have any kind of 'race-against-the-clock-type' plot. It really focuses on characters, conflict, and character relationship dynamics, much more so than your average genre.

Many psychological dramas have emerged over the past years, all in various media (film, literature, radio, etc.). Despite these very different forms of representation, general trends have appeared throughout the narratives. Some of these consistent themes include:

  • Reality
  • Perception
  • Mind
  • Existence/Purpose
  • Identity (One of our main themes)
  • Death
  • Highly character-driven
  • Emphasis on conflict
  • The primary conflict is internal or person vs. self
  • Little to no violence with the emphasis on character relationships and dilemmas.
These major subgenres help develop the plot of a psychological drama film, shaping the characters' personalities. e.g. usually character will find the true identity/the devil side of himself/herself.

Music/Sound Research

VOICE OVER

We had recorded a voice over seperately and this was supposed to complement the trailer as it progressed. However, we later put in the voice over and it did not coordinate at all: it clashed with the music we had so we decided not to include it. The voice was being overpowered by the already non diegetic sounds of the instrumental which is our main focus in sound, so instead titles were put in to replace the voice over.

CRIM3S

This was a potential artist we were going to use for the main music for our trailer. The genre of the music is witch hop and it seemed to have matched the genre of our trailer being a psychological drama. The first song we had in mind was 'Drawn.' Although we liked the monotony of the piece to act against the constantly changing quick images of our trailer, it seemed far too slow and the drop we were in search for was not apparent enough.

The other song we could have used was 'Salt'. This had the drop we required but the build up was far too long and it did not have the right tempo which conformed with our trailer. This had the element of slickness we wanted for our trailer and the finesse, but the drop in the beat was too slow and henceforth wouldn't have worked.

Another potential piece by CRIM3S we would have used was 'Fade.' The song was very repetitive and although it did have the slight fear factor we were in search for to add to the genre of our trailer, it did not make enough of an impact and would have made the trailer seem drab and quite slow paced.

Finally we decided not to use CRIM3S due to these issues and also because of the sudden emerges of voice you could hear which would have clashed with our trailer

KonviKt
This was a prospective piece of music we were going to use. This was dub-step music which were debating to use because of its pacing and subtlety however the issue with this music was the random voice which maybe possibly have been included in that particular part of the song if that was the part we would have chosen. Also we agreed that it sounded quite typical and found that it did not make the trailer stand out and in fact made it less appealing.
