Voice Over- Trial and Error

In our original storyboard and when planning our trailer, it was said from the start that the voice over would be used in the teaser trailer as this is a common convention. A reminder of the script:



"Enter a medium. Social Networking.
A Place where you can be who want to be.
Become your fantasy.
But what if your fantasy is to manipulate, deceive and impersonate.
What if your fantasy is to be something you're not."


In order to record this, we allocated someone we knew who we thought would be ideal for doing the voice over and proceeded to record it. This was done in the recording studio at school, and we had booked a day to do this. The whole procedure was done by Ella in the live room where she read out the script and we paced it according to the speed of the trailer by giving hand signals. Then when Ella was one, I went on to removing any static sounds done via a Mac on Adobe Audition by going onto 'Effects'--> 'Amplitude and Compression'--> 'DeSsor'. It was then completed by adjusting the threshold and dragging the first line where the dark green area is back to take the static away.

When putting the voice over onto the Mac for it to be used on Final Cut Pro it was only necessary that the voice over was saved into our area, ready to put on iTunes and then put into our trailer. Once this was done, we dragged it into our trailer once everything was in place, so that was the music and all the clips in the order that we wanted them to be in. However, when playing the whole final thing with the voice over, it was needless to say that it did not cohere with the trailer at all and sounded 'messy' with the music and the occasional dialogue. The voice over did not work well also because we figured that even if we were to redo it, we would never be satisfied with any voice we tried out. This then lead to the decision of excluding it from our trailer completely.

We wanted the script to give a general short and snappy insight into the films main themes e.g. Deception etc and highlight the presence of social networking in our plot. We didn't want the script to give too much information on any specifics like characters etc.

Considering the conventions of voice overs, I identified in my research, I decided to add references to our chosen production company and any previous films they have made that are in likeness to ours. This is so that we can identify with the audience who have perhaps seen and enjoyed those films and are likely to anticipate and enjoy our too.

For our voice over we preferably want a females voice- very British and feminine.

Voiceover - Deconstructions/Voiceover Idea

Voiceovers are an immediate recognisable convention of a film trailer which delivers several functions.

A voiceover has the ability to help audiences make sense of a narrative and give a range of information such as themes, characters background, the equilibrium and disequilibrium etc. As well as helping to develop the plot a voiceover can give information on the production personnel, their previous work, any awards etc and this may help to build anticipation to see the film.

The voiceover can set the tone of a film depending on the voice itself which can reinforce the purpose of the film. An average voiceover summarises in 4 – 8 lines and is deliberate in giving away too much especially endings or any twists.
|We decided to add a voice over to narrate our trailer, in response to our survey results.

During my research of voiceovers, I decided to deconstruct a few to fully grasp the different structures and approaches some voiceovers have.

I chose the trailers of the films; Grownups, Ella Enchanted, and Accepted.

Grownups: Voiceover Script

‘Thirty years ago they were the best of friends, now they’re getting back together and they’re all grown up. They’re meeting each other’s families…Learning about their kids… Reliving their glory days...’

Release Date:

‘...In two thousand ten...’

Production Company:

‘...From Columbia pictures comes a comedy (genre)… that proves growing up is optional...’

We want our voiceover to reflect an opinion on the power of social networking as opposed to just telling the story. This approach will rightfully give away the film’s theme and will be synchronous with the motion. The voiceover will inform the audience of what to expect. We will also include information, which we think is commonly specific to voiceovers, like the Production Company, actors name and ofcourse the film title.
